This course will provide practical assistance to the acupuncture practitioners who want to set up a low-cost, high-volume community acupuncture practice as outlined by the POCA co-op. Specifically, it will help the prospective community acupuncturists learn about the various important features of a community clinic space, and how the physical setup of the clinic can be conducive to building a community-focused social enterprise. Participants will view video tours of various community acupuncture clinic spaces, and some of those clinics will be shown in various stages of evolution. The clinics’ owners will provide useful commentary and practical advice about setting up a successful and efficient community acupuncture clinic space.

This course will provide an overview of how the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program might provide access to acupuncturists with large amounts of student debt via converting their POCA-qualified clinic into a 501c3 nonprofit. Students will review a description and a discussion of how one POCA clinic owner successfully obtained 501c3 status for her clinic. Participants will have access to a POCA forum thread which includes copies of the 1023 application and the bylaws for the IRS-approved clinic.
